Westco is dedicated to
providing a reliable supply of crop nutrients and related
services to its ownership and other customers. Prior to
1987, the company was also a producer of agricultural
fertilizers. In this role, Westco owned and operated two
production facilities in Alberta: one in Medicine Hat and one in
Calgary. Both facilities were shut down in 1987. Westco’s goal
is to decommission and reclaim these sites in a responsible and
efficient manner in compliance with environmental legislation.
Alberta Environment (AENV) has
granted Approvals for both sites. The Approvals incorporate
Westco’s detailed Decommissioning & Reclamation (D&R)
Strategies, which address facility demolition, completion of
environmental investigations, and development and implementation
of remediation activities where necessary. Specific remediation
activities are then approved by AENV
on a case-by-case basis.
Throughout the reclamation
process, Westco is committed to ensuring that opinions and
concerns of the community are understood. For that reason,
Community Liaison programs have been implemented at both sites.
Community Liaison Committees are in place in Calgary and
Medicine Hat, made up of local citizens, surrounding businesses,
interest groups, and applicable regulatory bodies. As well,
newsletters are regularly distributed to provide information
related to each site.
To date, eight newsletters have
been published for the Medicine Hat site, and two for the
Calgary site. These are provided via the links below.
